DesignIts predecessor, the BL1, achieved world fame when Winston Churchill placed it on his desk in Whitehall. The BL2 table lamp by Bestlite also captivates with a simple, functional design language that follows in the footsteps of the Bauhaus. BL2 table lamps are available in different versions. The shaft is bright chrome-plated. The shade and base of the Bestlite lamps are powder-coated and available in white, black, glossy chrome or fine porcelain. The textile covered cable is delivered in the colour of the chosen shade.
Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, Robert Dudley Best, who had previously studied in Germany, designed the Bestlite series as early as the 1930s in the family-owned manufactory Best & Lloyd. During the early years his lamps were mainly used in car repair shops and even in the hangar of the Royal Air Force, as their mobility ensured optimum lighting. The works of Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, whose designs Dudley Best had already admired at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1925, also served as models for him. The BL table lamp became an iconic fixture in Great Britain, not least because two-time British Prime Minister Churchill had it on his desk in Whitehall. After a successful career, Robert Dudley Best died in 1984 as one of the best-known British designers of the 20th century.
